FAQ's
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a paint process in which a mixture of pigment and resin is electrostatically charged and applied to primarily metal parts and then baked at approximately 400 degrees Farenheit.
What are the benefits of powder coating?
Powder coated parts are more resitant to scratching, chipping, and fading than parts coated with other paint processes. Powder coating is also EARTH FRIENDLY. While liquid finishes contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's), powder coating contains no solvents and releases virtually no VOC's. Powder Coating is not only ideal for your needs but is also the GREEN ALTERNATIVE to metal finishing.
How do you "prep" the parts prior to coating?
Depending on the parts, we either sandblast or "wash" the parts.
Items with existing finishes need to be sandblasted down to the bare metal. Sandblasting not only removes the old paint and/or rust, but also etches the surface allowing the powder to "bite" the parts ensuring maximum adhesion.
Raw metal parts which may be too delicate for sandblasting are prepped using an iron phosphate degreaser and clean water rinse. This process not only cleans the parts, but also delivers additional corrosion protection.
What if my parts are already powder coated?
Powder coated parts are often times too tough to simply sandblast off and require chemical stripping. Although we do not do chemical stripping in-house, we do work closely with a company we trust and can arrange for your parts to be taken to the the strippers and brought back.
What kind of parts are most often powder coated?
Automobile/Motorcycle parts, patio furniture, studio equipment, lighting fixtures, gym equipment, railings, gates, and studio equipment are some of our most commonly coated parts.
How long does the process take?
With one of the fastest turnaround times in the industry, Pyramid Powder Coating will typically have your parts back to you in 2-3 working days. A 24 hour turnaround is also available for an extra charge.
Is powder coating expensive?
No. If you consider both the cost and reliability of the alternative methods of metal finishing, powder coating your parts is extremely economical. For the around the same price (often times cheaper), powder coating is the best way to protect your investment.
Do I have to remove the tires before bringing in my wheels for powder coating?
Yes. We will also remove any of the lead weights and cut the valve stems off prior to sandblasting and powder coating.
Can you mask off areas which need to be free of powder?
Yes. We use a high-temp silicon tape to mask your parts. This tape will not leave a glue residue after it has been baked. For threaded holes and bolts, we use silicon plugs and caps. Our knowlegde of where and how to mask critical parts has made Pyramid Powder Coating the custom coater of choice for the most demanding of customers.
Will I have different colors to choose from?
Absolutely. We have hundreds of colors to choose from! Furthermore, we have accounts with every major powder manufacturer which means if there is a color out there, we can get it.
